Chainsaw and cleanup volunteers needed on Saturday, August 22Hurricane Isaias spun off multiple tornadoes as it moved up the coast. One of them left a 29-mile path of damage through Delaware. New Castle County DE has asked us to assist elderly and disabled residents living in the Townsend area who suffered damage to houses and trees as a result of the tornado. The county has scheduled a community service day on Saturday, August 22 and has tasked us with coordinating local volunteer groups as well as providing equipment, team leaders and DR volunteers. Although some local community volunteers are expected to turn out, we need to know how many of our DR volunteers are planning to come so we can plan out teams and assignments--we'll mix the untrained local volunteers into our DR teams whenever feasible. The recovery work day is scheduled from 9 am -- 4 pm. (check-in at 9; work begins by 9:30) This will be a one-day project; no overnight housing will be provided. We especially need DR volunteers trained in recovery work, although any DR volunteer is welcome to participate. Not everyone on the team will be operating a chainsaw; most of the team will be moving brush and branches.Due to the number of senior adults in the community needing assistance, additional DR work days may be scheduled later. If you'd like to participate but cannot come this Saturday, please indicate which date(s) you would be available to serve.More information will be provided once you sign up.COVID note: we will be following CDC best practices as much as possible. DO NOT DEPLOY If you are sick, if someone in your household is sick, if you've been exposed to COVID in the past 14 days or if someone in your household has been exposed to COVID in the past 14 days.
